These terms are the agreement between you and mentorhero. They explain what we do, what we ask of you, and what you can expect from us.
Please read them. They are shorter and plainer than most, deliberately, because we would rather you actually understood them than scrolled past.
By creating a mentorhero account you agree to these terms and to the policies listed in section 18.
1. Who we are
mentorhero is operated by Mentorhero Limited (company number 16861069), registered in England and Wales at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ. Where these terms say "we", "us" or "mentorhero", that is who you are dealing with.
2. What mentorhero is
mentorhero connects people who want career guidance with professionals willing to give 30 minutes of their time.
Mentees get free access to mentors. Mentors volunteer their time, usually through their employer. Partner organisations pay for the service, so that mentoring is free to the people receiving it.
mentorhero is free for mentees, always. We will never ask you to pay for mentoring, and no mentor is ever paid for a session.
3. What mentorhero is not
This matters, so we are being blunt about it.
- We are not a recruitment agency or a job board. We do not find you a job, and we do not put you forward for one.
- Mentoring is not professional advice. A mentor shares personal experience and opinion. They are not giving you legal, financial, medical, immigration or mental health advice, and you should not treat it as such. If you need professional advice, get it from a qualified professional.
- Mentors speak for themselves, not their employers. What a mentor tells you is their own view. It is not the position of the organisation they work for, and it does not commit that organisation to anything.
- We do not guarantee outcomes. We cannot promise you a job, an interview, a particular mentor, a session by a particular date, or any specific result.
4. Mentoring and jobs
Mentors and mentees both agree that mentoring stays mentoring. A mentee will not ask their mentor for a job, and a mentor will not offer one or put a mentee forward for a role.
If you came to mentorhero after an unsuccessful job application, please understand clearly:
- Your application decision has already been made and mentoring cannot change it
- Taking part, or not taking part, has no effect whatsoever on any future application to that organisation
- The organisation that referred you is never told whether you signed up or what you did
Mentoring is offered because we think it is genuinely useful, not as a consolation prize with strings attached.
5. Who can use mentorhero
Mentors must be 18 or over.
Mentees must be 16 or over. If you are 16 or 17, a parent or guardian must give consent before you can be matched with a mentor. We will contact them to arrange this.
We cannot accept anyone under 16. If we discover an account belongs to someone under 16, we will close it and delete the data.
Where a mentee is 16 or 17, their mentor will hold a criminal record check appropriate to the country they are both in, verified by us.
If you are giving consent as a parent or guardian, you confirm that you genuinely hold parental responsibility for that young person, or are otherwise properly entitled to consent on their behalf.
6. Your account
Keep your details accurate and up to date. We rely on what you tell us, particularly your date of birth, and we do not independently verify most of it.
Giving us false information is a serious matter. Misrepresenting your age, your identity, or your background check is grounds for immediate closure of your account, and may be reported where the law requires it.
Your account is yours alone. Do not share access, and do not let anyone else use it. We sign you in with a code sent to your email, so keep that email account secure. Tell us straight away if you think someone else has got into your account.
7. How mentoring works
Booking. Mentors set their own availability. We offer mentees a selection of slots. Slots are offered to more than one person at a time, so a slot can be taken before you book it.
Sessions are 30 minutes, virtual, and hosted on Daily.
Turning up. If you cannot make a session, cancel as early as you can so the slot can go to someone else.
If you miss two sessions in a row, we pause your account. While it is paused, a mentee cannot book new sessions and a mentor's times are not offered to mentees. Sessions already booked still go ahead. To have it reactivated, book a short call with our team; after the call we decide whether your account can be reactivated. We may also pause an account while we look into a concern about someone's behaviour.
Frequency. There is a gap between sessions for each mentee, so that access is shared fairly across everyone waiting. This is not a limit on you specifically.
Matching. We suggest matches based on topics, availability, language and the safeguarding rules that apply. You can decline any match. We explain how this works in our Privacy Policy.
8. How you agree to behave
When you join, you make a set of commitments appropriate to your role, and you agree to the terms for that role. Those documents form part of these terms and are binding.
In short: turn up on time, keep your camera on, treat each other with respect, keep contact on mentorhero, do not record or share sessions, and tell us if something does not feel right.
Confidentiality goes both ways. What is shared in a session stays in the session. The exception is safeguarding: if a mentor is worried about a young person's safety, they must tell us, and they will.
9. Safeguarding
Nothing in these terms limits what we will do to keep people safe.
We can suspend or close any account immediately, without notice and without warning, where we have a safeguarding concern. We do not have to explain our reasoning in full, and we may involve the police, a local authority or another authority where appropriate.
We would always rather act early and be wrong than wait and be right. If you are ever uncomfortable, tell us at privacy@mentorhero.com.
10. For mentors: this is volunteering
You mentor as a volunteer, usually through an employer-supported volunteering program. Nothing in these terms creates a contract of employment, a worker relationship, a partnership or an agency relationship between you and mentorhero. You are not our employee or our worker, we do not pay you, and you are free to mentor as much or as little as you choose.
Please check with your employer before mentoring in work time. Whether mentoring counts as work time is a matter between you and them.
11. Things you upload
You keep ownership of everything you give us: your profile, your CV, your photo, your answers.
By uploading it, you give us permission to use it to run mentorhero: to show your profile to a matched mentor or mentee, to help us match you, and to keep your account working. That permission lasts while your account is open and ends when we delete your data.
We will not use your photo or your story in marketing without asking you separately. That is what the Image Rights Consent is for, it is optional, and you can withdraw it.
Do not upload anything that is not yours to upload, or anything unlawful, offensive or misleading.
12. Our brand and our platform
The mentorhero name, logo, platform, content and materials belong to us. You may not copy, resell or reuse them without our written permission.
Your mentor badge and the materials we give you are for your own use, to show that you mentor with us. That is encouraged, and no permission is needed for that.
13. Things we cannot control
We depend on other companies, including Daily for video and Supabase and Vercel for hosting. When you join a session you use Daily's service and their terms apply to that.
We aim to keep mentorhero available but we cannot promise it will never be down. We are not responsible for failures of the internet, of third-party services, or of anything else outside our reasonable control.
14. Our responsibility to you
We will provide mentorhero with reasonable care and skill.
We do not exclude, and cannot exclude, liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to exclude. Nothing here affects your legal rights as a consumer.
Beyond that, and because mentorhero is provided free to mentors and mentees:
- We are not responsible for what a mentor or mentee says or does. They are individuals giving their own views, not our representatives.
- We are not responsible for decisions you take based on something said in a session.
- We are not responsible for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost earnings, lost opportunities or lost profits.
Our total liability to you for anything connected with mentorhero is limited to £100. That is one cap, stated here and in Mentee Terms 11C.5 and Mentor Terms 8A.5, not a separate cap in each document. It does not apply to death or personal injury caused by our negligence, to fraud, or to anything else the law does not allow us to limit, and it does not affect your rights as a consumer.
14A. Claims between a mentor and a mentee
Mentoring is guidance, not professional advice. Section 3 says so, and a mentor and a mentee each agree not to bring a claim against the other over the guidance given in a session or a decision taken afterwards.
That agreement is set out in full, in matching terms on each side, in Mentee Terms 11E and Mentor Terms 8D. Read there for what it does not cover, which includes harm, abuse, harassment, discrimination, dishonesty, anything sexual, a breach of confidence, and anything the law does not let us exclude. It never limits anyone's right to report a concern to us or to an authority.
15. If a partner's arrangement ends
If you joined through an employer, university or other organisation and their arrangement with mentorhero ends, your access through them ends too. We will tell you if that happens and explain what it means for any sessions already booked.
16. Ending your account
You can leave at any time, for any reason, by contacting us. There is nothing to pay and no notice period.
We may suspend or close your account if you break these terms or the terms for your role, give us false information, behave in a way that is abusive or unsafe, repeatedly fail to turn up, or where we have a safeguarding concern.
Except where safeguarding is involved, we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond.
When an account closes, we handle your data as set out in the Privacy Policy. Some records, including your policy agreements and any safeguarding records, are kept for longer because the law requires it.
17. If something goes wrong
Tell us. Email support@mentorhero.com and we will look into it properly and come back to you.
If it concerns someone's safety, use the safeguarding address in section 9 instead, and we will treat it as urgent.
18. How our policies fit together
By using mentorhero you agree to these terms and to:
- our Privacy Policy
- our Cookie Policy
- our Safeguarding Policy
- the Mentor Terms or Mentee Terms, depending on your role
- our Mentor Terms, if you are a mentor
- the commitments you make when you join
If these terms and one of those policies disagree, these terms take precedence, except on anything about personal data, where the Privacy Policy wins.
If you are an organisation partnering with us, your signed partner agreement governs our commercial relationship and takes precedence over these terms where the two differ.
19. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as mentorhero develops. If we make a material change we will tell you and ask you to review it before you carry on using mentorhero.
We keep every previous version, and the date at the top tells you when this one last changed.
20. General
Transferring this agreement. We may transfer our rights and obligations to another organisation, for example if our business is sold, provided this does not reduce your rights. You cannot transfer yours without our written agreement.
Other people. Nobody who is not a party to these terms can enforce them under the Contracts (Rights of Third Parties) Act 1999, with one exception. A mentor may enforce Mentee Terms 11E against the mentee who agreed it, and a mentee may enforce Mentor Terms 8D against the mentor who agreed it. Those two clauses exist to protect the other participant, so they would be worth nothing if that person could not rely on them. No other clause, and nobody else, gains any right to enforce anything. We and the participant who gave one of those agreements may vary or withdraw it without the consent of the person it protects.
If part of this does not work. If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
Delay is not waiver. If we do not enforce something straight away, that does not mean we have given up the right to enforce it later.
Which law applies. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you can bring proceedings in your own country's courts.
